Day Tripping

January 13th, 2019

Day tripping up the coast of California
Past through towns we’d never heard of nor would visit again,
With morning scones on hungover tongues
And folds of pastry dissolving into
the seafood air along eucalyptus avenues and forgotten highways
That the GPS didn’t have speed limits for.
Licking smoke on our lips & driving like we had always been machines
Out in the unreasonable December sunshine
Where the waves fell to unseen beaches.
On that unwilling evening we drew salty breaths in the pink-oranging light towards tomorrow
